How it works

See it. Use it. Keep it.

  1. See

Your home and lock screen show one pair: the flat phrase you use, and the word that says it better. It changes every 3 hours.

  2. Use

Tap Check right in the widget. A sentence with a gap, three options, one of them a typical trap. Ten seconds, no app to open.

  3. Keep

Get it right and the word comes back in 3 days, then 7, 16, 35. Miss it and it’s back tomorrow. Your streak grows with one answer a day.

Widgets

Learn where you already look.

You unlock your phone dozens of times a day. Upword puts one word there: the flat phrase crossed out, the better word underlined in yellow. A new pair every 3 hours, eight a day, no repeats while there are new ones left.

  • Medium — the pair, an example and a Check button that works without opening the app.
  • Small — the better word, big. Tap to check it.
  • Lock screen — a two-line card and an inline line above the clock.

The check

Ten seconds. Try one.

Reading a word is not knowing it. Each pair comes with a sentence and three options, and one of them is the trap people actually fall into: a lookalike, the wrong form, the wrong context. No timer, no score to lose.

In the app it runs inside the medium widget, so you answer from the home screen.

Don’t sayvery tired

After the shoot I was blank.

No timer. Pick the word that fits.

Spaced repetition

Words come back right before you forget them.

Upword uses five boxes, the Leitner way. Each right answer moves a word one box up and further into the future. A miss sends it back to the first box, and you see it again tomorrow. Short daily checks, long memory.

Back tomorrow, then in 3 days, 7, 16 and 35. One answer a day counts; repeats are fine but don’t move the word. Answer once a day to keep your streak, and one missed day a week is forgiven.

Small app. Careful words.

  • 150 hand-picked words

B1 to C1. Every pair has a rule, an example and a check written by hand, not generated.

  • Chat, work or exam

Pick a context. Chat skips formal words, exam puts them first.

  • My words

Everything you’ve met, sorted into learning, learned and mastered, with search.

  • A gentle nudge

One reminder at 19:00, only if you haven’t answered today. Turn it off any time.

  • Offline, no account

Nothing to sign up for. Your progress lives on your iPhone.

  • Sometimes, keep it simple

About one pair in ten says the plain word is already right, and explains why.
